Africa, breadbasket for a new world? (October 2009)
Food prices have been on the rise globally – to the dismay of many a consumer and government
official who is trying to keep voters happy and fed. The recent spate of anti-competitive actions
against large South African food companies and comments from various consumer groups about
the continuing rise of food prices have in many cases been attributed to greedy retailers and
collusion by large food companies.

AGRI-BEE PARTNERSHIP YIELDS FRUIT (October 2009)
In October 2008, Ryton Estates, a 250 hectare citrus and avocado farm recently acquired by the Department Rural
Development (DRD) and Land Reform, was on the verge of becoming another agri-bee statistic. The farm’s electricity
was about to be cut off, fertilizer and sprays were not applied and only a skeleton staff was employed.
Vutsela Investments, a group of black agri-entrepreneurs came to the rescue and acquired a long term lease from the
DRD for Ryton. They then proceeded to enter into a joint venture with the Unlimited Group, a diversified and
established player in the fresh produce sector. Management of the farm was transferred to the newly established joint
venture on 1 October 2008, and a recovery plan was immediately implemented to turn operations around. The
workforce was re-appointed and the farm currently employs 90 people permanently and 300 seasonal workers during
harvest.

UNLIMITED GROUP ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE IN SMARTIE TOWN (June 2008)

Fruits Unlimited, part of the Unlimited Group, completed their baseline carbon footprint in 2007. They offset this baseline footprint by greening colourful Smartie Town through the planting of 204 Trees for Homes through Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA).
A leading South African fruit supply chain manager specialising in the export of top quality fruit, Fruits Unlimited were the first company of its kind to take this voluntary climate change action and have now rolled the carbon footprint out to the rest of the Group.
The 2008 carbon footprint includes Fruits Unlimited, Unlimited Logistics, Unlimited Holding Group, Fruition Fruit and Asiafresh and the 2008 carbon footprint for the head office in Paarl will be offset by planting trees.
Following the first calculation there has been a reduction in the emissions per employee at the head office. This is commendable and it is hoped other companies take up the challenge to measure, reduce and offset.
Calculations and an evaluation of their carbon footprint was conducted using the guidelines set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and were based on the financial year July 2007 to June 2008 carbon emissions associated with all business related travel such as flights and rental car transport, as well as electricity.
The 224 indigenous trees needed to offset their baseline carbon emissions will add to the 204 trees planted at Smartie Town near their Paarl head office in the Western Cape last year. The residents of this nearby government housing initiative, affectionately known as Smartie Town because of its brightly coloured buildings, are delighted to again be the beneficiaries of the Unlimited Group’s action against global warming and look forward to welcoming the group’s delegates on the 29th of May 2009.
The event will take place at the Rainbow Educare in Milky Town, Ward 14. For more information or if you would like to attend this event, please contact Lucky Xaba on 083 710 2544 or Joanne Rolt of FTFA on
joanne@trees.org.za or 011 803 9750.
