Our Story

We’ve been growing, preparing and packing fresh produce for over 25 years. From beautiful candied beetroot grown on the slopes of Table Mountain, to our macadamia nuts which are harvested and cracked in the lush northern province of Limpopo, we’ve grown a lot since starting out in 1991.Today we leverage a wide array of micro-climates across South Africa and have the logistics and infrastructure to facilitate getting these products to market efficiently and with excellence. Take a look at our story below…

YUKON INTERNATIONAL IS REGISTERED

In 1991 Yukon International was established. Named after the gold rush next to the Yukon River in the USA, Yukon quickly evolved from a general trading business, to an exporter of specialised vegetables. The potential for a uniquely South African range of vegetable products for discerning international markets became clear and this became the main focus of the Yukon business. Purchasing a stake in one of their main supplier’s farms brought with it further supply chain integration, as did the creation of Yukon Europe, a distribution hub in the UK.

1997
DEREGULATION OF THE FRUIT INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA

The deregulation of the South African fruit industry was a key event in the history of the Group. After the first free and fair elections of 1994, deregulation meant fruit could be exported independently for the first time—free from government-appointed fruit agents and boards.

THE BIRTH OF FRUITS UNLIMITED

2000
THE BIRTH OF FRUITS UNLIMITED

In 2000, a group of South African growers collaborated to form an export company, Fruits Unlimited. The main aim was to export grapes form their various family farms. They started exporting in 2001 and since then, growing the products we export has been at the core of our DNA at Fruits Unlimited. Soon stone fruit was added to the basket, and citrus and other top fruit divisions followed. Fruits Unlimited could now offer a whole basket of South African fruits to global markets.

FRUITION STARTED SUPPLYING WOOLWORTHS

Fruition Fruit (Pty) Ltd was born as a joint venture between Yukon and Fruits Unlimited in 2004. Yukon and Fruits Unlimited crossed paths when Fruits Unlimited started supplying leading South African retailer Woolworths with stone fruit. Yukon had been supplying Woolworths for some time with their speciality veg and the two businesses decided to join forces and become a specialist in supplying Woolworths with a range of products.

2006
THE FORMATION OF THE UNLIMITED GROUP

Rapid supply chain integration, from orchard to shelf, became very apparent in the year following the deregulation of the South African fruit industry. Companies needed to control the entire supply chain as far as possible, up to the point of delivery to the retailer. This would require resources and a strong team. In December 2006, Yukon and Fruits Unlimited merged the two businesses and form a diversified fresh produce investment holding company. The focus of this venture would be to develop a diversified portfolio of businesses in the fresh sector. The key driver of the new group would be supply chain integration and value-adding to the products we produced and sourced. Integration of production was and still is at the heart of The Unlimited Group’s strategy.

2011
THE UNLIMITED NUT COMPANY

2011
THE UNLIMITED NUT COMPANY

By 2011, The Unlimited Group had become heavily invested in a number of farming operations across South Africa. One of these operations was The Tshakhuma Community Farms in Levubu. Back then, Tshakhuma had 120 hectares of macadamia nuts, so The Unlimited Group was forced to look at marketing this macadamia crop. This soon became the catalyst behind the formation of a division within the group solely focussed on the production, sourcing, processing and exporting of nuts. Today, Unlimited Nuts has been spun off as a fully operational nut marketing company, offering a complete basket of South African tree nuts, including macadamias, pecans and, more recently, almonds.

2013
GLOBAL HARVEST GROWERS

In 2013, the opportunity to set up a retail service provider to leading Russian retailers presented itself. This concept aligned well with the Group’s founding principle of supply chain integration and led to a joint venture with a Russian retail specialist. Global Harvest Growers now supplies a number of Russian retailers with a combination of citrus, vegetables and other fruits from South Africa, Egypt, Israel, India and South America.

2015
FIELDFRESH

In 2015, we acquired a 50% stake in Fieldfresh Fruit & Veg. Fieldfresh was already supplying fresh cut vegetables, fruit and value added food products to the leading retailers in South Africa. This venture allowed the group to further drive integration of the supply chain and add maximum value to the products we produced.

2016
THE CUSTOM PLUM COMPANY

The formation of the Unlimited Group back in 2006 also brought with it the realisation that securing the best possible genetics and varietals for our growers would be integral to the long term success of any integrated fresh produce business. In 2016, we formed a joint venture with our long-standing partner, The Fresca Group, to form a dedicated stone fruit genetics company and IP manager in The Custom Plum Company (CPC). CPC focusses on commercialising the Zaiger Interspecifics programme in Southern Africa.
